About

Yellow Fever: Risks, Symptoms, and How to Stay Protected

Yellow fever is a potentially serious viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes in tropical regions of Africa, South America, and parts of Central America. While some cases cause only mild, flu-like symptoms (fever, headache, muscle pain), others can lead to severe complications including jaundice, liver failure, and even death.

Since there’s no specific treatment, prevention through vaccination is crucial. The yellow fever vaccine offers lifelong protection for most travelers and is often mandatory for entry into certain countries. At Glenfield Pharmacy, our accredited Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre can provide the vaccine and your official International Certificate of Vaccination (“Yellow Card”) in one visit.

Plan ahead—vaccination is required at least 10 days before travel to ensure full protection. Some countries strictly require proof of vaccination – without it, you may be denied entry or face quarantine.

Yellow Fever Vaccine – What You Need to Know

When to get vaccinated:
We recommend getting your yellow fever vaccine at least 10 days before travel to ensure full protection and compliance with international entry requirements.

How long it lasts:
In most cases, one dose offers lifelong protection. Boosters are rarely needed, although there are exceptions (e.g. children under 2).

Dose & administration:
Just one injection, typically given in the upper arm by our trained healthcare professionals.

Protection duration:
The vaccine is designed to provide long-term immunity. For the majority of travellers, no additional doses are required.

Possible side effects:
Most people experience no serious side effects. Some may have mild symptoms like soreness at the injection site, headache, or muscle aches. Severe reactions are extremely rare.

Children:
Generally, the vaccine is not recommended for children under 9 months of age due to a higher risk of adverse effects.

Additional precautions:
Alongside vaccination, we strongly advise practising mosquito bite prevention—especially in high-risk areas.

Travel certificate:
Many countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP) for entry. This certificate becomes valid 10 days after your jab and is issued at your appointment.

Why it matters:
Yellow fever can range from a mild illness to a severe, life-threatening condition involving internal bleeding and organ failure. Vaccination is a vital step in protecting yourself and others.
